Discussion:
VMS compatible terminal emulator for Mac OS X

Hi Group,

I have just install a wireless network and I would like to be able to
connect to my DS10L running VMS 7.3-2 from my powerbook G4 running Mac
OSX 10.3.x.

I have tried terminal which is pretty poor. Could not even get the
ctrl-z to work correctly. Also tried powerterm - but this is not as
nice as I had hoped - plus pretty pricy. Virtual keyboard and fonts
were pretty poor.

Any other suggestions. Does WRQ still market a terminal emulator for
Mac OSX?

Main use is to run EVE (edit / tpu) for editoring source files.

Thanks

Stuart

Even though it runs in Classic, I found that NiftyTelnet SSH works
great on the Mac. You can use the upper row of the numeric keypad
in EVE, unlike in Mac OS X terminal.

I am typing this from a PowerBook G4 under Tiger. The emulater is
"dataComet-Secure" and is pretty good. Have a look under www.databeast.com,
US$ 60 for the telnet version, US$ 70 for the SSH version. A free 30 day trial
is available as well.

Seeing that you are using Tiger OS X, are you having any
issues with Safari locking up the o/s?
I heard that lookupd is causing the problems, but not sure
if Apple has resolved the problem or there is a work around.

If you don't mind downloading freeware off the net, I've found iTerm to
be pretty good. It's written for OS X.

I would have preferred the WRQ Reflections, but it is so OLD and only runs
under OS9. I settled with PowerTerm, and I have the same opinion as you do
with it.

Hmm, I use terminal on a Powerbook G4 on OS X 10.4.2 and it is almost
perfect after a few tweaks in system preferences->keyboard and mouse
1. check use f1-f12 to control software features (also in 10.3.x)

2. fiddle the modifier keys to put the ctrl key where god intended (use
caps lock key) Tiger only.
You still need to type out the escape sequences for insert and remove,
but that is the penalty you pay for using a girly editor like eve
instead of teco. However, once you upgrade to 10.4.x, terminal allows
you to map the keyboard how you like.

If you must remap your keyboard in 10.3.x use xterm that comes bundled
with OS X.
You could even go crazy with a set display and run a proper DECterm. (I
tried it and thought it was too ugly for words) With X11, be prepared
for the usual perpetual fiddling with xinitrc. subscribing to
x11-***@lists.apple.com might be helpful.

If you choose Monaco font, you even get the cute little DEC
supplemental characters for cr lf newline and so on. (-1,3:w$$ in teco
aka seeall mode - as if you give a damn)

ps. Mac OS X and VMS TCPIP do a good job of ssh together.
pps. it all works fine over wireless, although you should be aware that
the wireless interface on the Mac wants a different IP address (EN1
settings for wireless and EN0 for wired ethernet)

An alternative to typing those escape sequences within EVE is to define
CTRL or GOLD sequences for insert and remove in EVEINI.EVE.

There's also aterm, which I've built and tried with limited success on
OS X V10.3.9: http://www.afterstep.org/aterm.php will get you there.
You have to have X11 installed, however.

You can use aterm's resource file to remap the keyboard, if you
understand how to assign your own definitions to the appropriate keysym
resources. So far I don't understand very well and have only been able
to get a few of the numeric keypad keys and f-keys to work. As seems to
be the general case, the upper row of keys is difficult. At least I
have the six editing keys (find, insert here, etc.) mostly working..

Of course, you should also be able to use X resources to just remap
xterm's keys as needed, but aterm somehow looks nicer and is probably a
lot slimmer, too.

While I worked at Digital/Compaq/HP (Mac OS X days were only
Compaq/HP), I used Mac OS X 10.3 Terminal rather well. I did make
some changes to the setup.

In the Terminal -> Window Settings... -> Keyboard, I ether added
new key mappings, or modified existing mappings to work properly
with the extended keyboard, especially so that I could use things
like the arrow keys, and the keypad with VMSNOTES which uses EVE
as its editor.

I also set Terminals -> Windows Settings ... -> Emulation to
Strick Vt100 emulation.

You may also want to specify the Terminal Preferences -> $TERM to
something that is recognized by your VMS system.

I also installed on Panther, uControl so that I could map the
Capslock key as Control. On Tiger the System Preferences has the
ability to do that for you.

As for Control/Z, if you can not get that to work, then there are
some issues that have nothing to do with Terminal.

Since leaving Digital/Compaq/HP (OK they threw me out along with
most of the 3rd floor of ZKO :-), I have used both Terminal and
iTerm as my primary terminal sessions talking to my PowerMac
workstation, and Linux systems both in my office and 2,000 miles
away via ssh.

Both have their advantages for what I do (writing software), and I
spend a great deal of time in terminal/iTerm windows.

out-of-the-box, xterm has a workable set of keys to emulate vt220.
(though putting PF1-PF4 on F1-F4 isn't what people expect - they can
of course remap those with resources).

xterm supports ANSI color, VT220 emulation and UTF-8

Thomas, could you be looking at an older version of aterm? I have
V1.0.0, which has some code in source file xresources.c that appeart it
might do this. The man page for V1.0.0 also documents how to use these
resources, though older versions don't. I haven't checked to see if the
code actually does what I think, though.

I downloaded V1.0.0 from SourceForge at this link:

I have been very happy using VersaTerm. It runs in classic mode under
Mac OS X.

See http://www.synergy.com/versfeat.htm

I have been using version 4.6.3 happily since 1991-92, and have had no
problems under Mac OS X, except that some of the keys F1 through F15
are hijacked by the operating system. I don't know whether the current
version (5.07???) exhibits the same problem, or not. VT220 emulation
appears to be correct otherwise.

There is a VersaTerm Pro product, which as I understand it provides
emulations of more terminal models (e.g., ReGIS-compatible graphics),
but which does not provide any better an emulation of the VT220, which
is all I have needed.
